In the old days, we were called girls needlewomen. And it’s not in vain! Because we are dexterous to any work, and especially to fine, manual embroidery or sewing. Unfortunately, in the modern world, where there is practically no place for free time, sewing clothes has faded into the background. And more and more often we get the right things in stores, but we don’t even think about sewing.
But having a machine at home and the necessary knowledge, we can sew this or that thing in the shortest possible time. And also improve the old or repair a torn product. In this article we will talk about how to properly sew the elastic in the belt, in the sleeve, as well as in the collar of a shirt, dress, blouse or sweater.
Gum selection
In the world there are several types of gum. First view - This is an elastic tape-base, which is covered with cotton fiber.
And second - the most familiar and accessible kind to us, ordinary linen elastic, of varying degrees of rigidity.
You can sew such elastic bands in clothes, both manually, and by means of the machine.
Recommendation for beginners, for the first time, use the second type of elastic for sewing in clothes. Because it is easier to work with ordinary linen elastic, and it does not deform when sewn.
Sew the elastic in the collar
Using a typewriter
For stitching gum the easiest and fastest way is a zigzag stitch. Such a stitch will help you sew an elastic band into a product from a stretching fabric.
It can be a blouse or a blouse that you want to wear without straps. The sewn-in elastic at her collar will not allow such a blouse to fall from your shoulders.
- To get started, take a linen gum slightly shorter than the cut of your product. This is done so that the sewn elastic band tightens the fabric, preventing things from slipping from your body.
- Then wrap it around your chest, grabbing your hands. If the blouse will be held with an elastic only on the chest, then wrap the chest only with an elastic band. Feel the tension of the tape, and cut off the unnecessary.
- After we cut the finished piece of tape in half and proceed to stitching:
- We take a long section and sew a zigzag seam beyond its edge.
- On the segment of the finished thing, you need to choose a line so that it has a large step, and does not touch the elastic ties of the gum itself.
- We flash the entire segment, and then take the second piece and make a couple of marks on it.
- We tighten the part of the elastic band under the seam in such a way that the marks coincide with the edges of the product itself. Sew on the edges.
Manual method
In the manual sewing method, you repeat the actions of the machine, simulating a zigzag seam.
Sew an elastic band into the belt of trousers or pants
Using a typewriter
We take an elastic band and wrap it around the waist, and its thickness should be from 1.5 to 3 cm.
- We select a knitted seam on a typewriter, and set the interval to 3. The foot needs to be zigzagged. Then, combine the ends of the gum and stitch them.
- Take the pants and twist them inside out, for convenience. Then we attach a rubber band to their top. We fix the gum seams with seams on the pants with the help of pins.
- Attach the elastic with a knitted seam.
- After proceeding to the processing of the edges. We put the foot on the overcasting and select the overlock seam, and attach the edge of the product.
- Then we change the foot again to the usual one and select the knitted stitch with an interval of 3. We sew the entire elastic band along its bottom, deviating from the top about 2 cm, depending on the width of the elastic band itself.
Manual method
Unfortunately, in the manual method, it will be very difficult to sew this gum into the belt. Therefore, if you do not have a machine, it is better to return the product to a workshop where they will help you in this matter.
Sew the elastic into the sleeve
If you want to sew an elastic band into a sleeve of a blouse or a turtleneck, then this can be done quickly and without problems at home.
- We set the machine to look like a zigzag stitch, and the stitch length to 3. Your needle should be “stretch”, which is suitable for working with elastic tape.
- Take the sleeve of the product and turn it inside out. Then we put under the claw of the machine.
- We put the elastic over the stitch on the sleeve and attach it, not forgetting to pull it a little.
The result is such wonderful products with an elastic band in the sleeve:
