Highlighting hair: varieties, performance features for dark and light hair (56 photo examples)

Highlighting hair is one of the most popular techniques for gentle dyeing. Highlighting has won women's hearts due to the fact that hair coloring occurs only partially, in several strands, without ruining the entire mass of hair. The highlighting technique appeared more than fifteen years ago. Since then, it has been at the peak of popularity, then replaced by other, more modern trends. At present, the highlighting technique occupies a confident position among other hair dyeing techniques. There are several highlighting techniques, both for light and dark hair. In addition, many confuse highlighting with booking. These two staining techniques, although similar, have their own distinct differences. In a recent article, we already talked about all subtleties of armoring, and today we’ll talk about the highlighting technique.

What is highlighting?

Highlighting is a hair dyeing procedure that involves dyeing only a few strands. In the professional hands of a master, highlighting becomes an excellent procedure for changing the image without radical changes in appearance. Properly performed dyeing gives the hair shine and volume, and also fits perfectly into the overall color scheme of the hair. Highlighting can be carried out both on dark and on fair hair. There are several basic techniques for highlighting.

Highlighting Techniques

  1. Mazhimesh technique. This highlighting technique uses very soft dyes that do not damage the hair structure. Dyes are made on the basis of a cream, and finally wax is added to the mixed mass. Subsequently, the hair shines and has a delicate honey tint.
  2. Pastel staining. This technique uses paints of exceptionally cold colors. That is why after dyeing, the natural color of the hair looks slightly muffled.
  3. Balayazh technique. This is also a rather gentle technique. when creating paints, masters use cream bases and, like with majimesh, add a little wax. However, many use this technique only on short hair.
  4. Technique naturel. This technique is mainly used for women with blond hair. It consists in creating darker, as if burnt out, roots and brighter ends. It looks very natural. Hence the name.
  5. American highlighting. Perhaps the most laborious highlighting technique. It is mainly used for thin strands and is ideal for brunettes.

Highlighting on dark hair

It is worth remembering that lightening dark hair is much more difficult than adding colors to light, so highlighting on dark hair is much longer and more difficult. Yes, and hair from this, of course, is much more harmful. However, dark-haired beauties still love this dyeing technique, because highlighting of dark hair can add volume to them and refresh the whole image as a whole.

For dark-haired ladies, the most suitable shades for highlighting are:

  • honey;
  • copper;
  • nutty;
  • Caramel
  • cognac, etc.

The shade for highlighted strands must be selected based on your natural hair color. It should not differ from it by more than 1-2 tones. It is in this case that the coloring will look good and not elaborate.

IMPORTANT! When highlighting dark hair, the locks should be very thin (from about 2 to 5 millimeters).It is with this thickness that all hair will look uniform and more natural.

Highlighting on fair hair

Highlighting of fair hair is very popular now. There are three main techniques for highlighting blond hair:

  1. California highlighting. California highlighting differs from the classic one in that after coloring the strands should dry without foil, in natural conditions. In addition, with this technique only natural shades are used.
  2. Reverse highlighting. This technique consists in darkening light strands and is mainly used on already grown hairs that require coloring.
  3. Dark highlighting. This is a classic highlighting on fair hair, in which the strands are darkened. This technique uses gentle dyes that do not damage the hair structure.
